MAINTENANCE OF THE MEDICAL GAS DELIVERY SYSTEM

NFPA 99, TJC, and CMS all require that healthcare facilities “shall perform and document routine maintenance of the medical gas delivery systems”.

This work can be performed in-house or subcontracted to a third party maintenance company. However tasked; the healthcare facility has the ultimate responsibility to insure the systems are operating at peak efficiency and defencencies are addresed in a timely fashion.

Appropriate training and credentialing of the personnel tasked with performing these services will help to establish a baseline of competency for the necessary work to be performed and documented.

Do not forget to provide the appropriate training for the staff that will be tasked with managing or supervising these services. Another area of importance is to provide in-service training for all of the clinical staff that will utilize theses life support systems on a daily basis.
